fifty perc-ent by Direct Recruitment; and
fifty Percent by promotion from the cadre of Assistant Instructor. If no suitable candidate is available for promotion, by deputation of an officer from the Karnataka State Police Service in the rank of Sub-Inspector of Police.
Method of selection for Direct Recruitment.- The Direct Recruitment shall be made by a Selection Authority consisting of,-
(1)IGP and Additional Commandant General, Home Guards and Additional director Civil Defence in charge of Recruitment

The selection authority shall invite applications from eligible candidates in such forms as may be specified by the Appointing authority by giving wide publicity at least in two leading kannada newspapers having wide circulation.
The selection shall be made on merit determined on the basis of performance in the following tests, namely:-
I. PHYSICAL STANDARDS TEST:-
The candidates shall be first be subjected to a Physical Standards Test.
The candidates who do not fulfil physical standards or are found to be having any of the physical defects shall be disqualified.
PHYSICAL ENDURANCE TEST:
Those who qualify in the Physical Standards Tests shall appear for a Physical Endurance Test. Physical endurance is only a qualifying test. The candidates are required to run 2 kilometers in 10 minutes and Women candidates required to run 500 mtrs in 2 minutes 30 seconds and Ex-service in 2 minutes. Only those who qualify in Physical Endurance Test shall appear for Physical Efficiency Test.

NOTE (1): Each event carries 5 (Five) marks. A candidate shall pass in at least three events to qualify for the Written Test. Passing in each event will fetch five marks. Thus a candidate may fetch Fifteen, Twenty or Twenty-five marks depending on whether he qualifies in three, four or five events. These marks will be added to the percentage of the marks obtained by the candidate in the written tests, for the preparation of the merit list.
NOTE(2): Candidate who remain absent from any of the three tests: Physical Standards, Endurance and Efficiency tests shall be disqualified.
II. Written Examination :
There shall be a written examination in English /Kannada with two papers of Degree Standard.
[a) Paper-I: - Shall consist of two parts. First Part consists of Essay writing in English or Kannada carrying twenty (20) marks and the second part consists of translation of a passage (1) from English into Kannada and (2) from Kannada into English carrying twenty (20) marks. Paper I will be of one hour duration carrying forty (40) marks. There shall be no minimum marks.
[b) Paper-II:- Shall consist of questions in General studies comprising [i) General Knowledge consisting of
[a) Science [b) Geography
[c) History [d) Indian Constitution [e) National freedom movement, and on
[ii) General Mental ability consisting of [a) Computational skills [b) Spatial recognition skills
[c)Comprehension [d) Judgement and [e) Decision making capability. It shall be of objective type with multiple choices and of one hour thirty minutes duration. It shall carry one hundred and fifty (150) marks.
III. Viva Voce :- Based on the marks obtained in the written examination, the candidates shall be required to appear for an interview carrying ten (10) marks in the ratio of 1:3 for each post in each category. There shall be no minimum marks. Based on the marks secured in the Physical efficiency test and written examination and viva-voce a final select list of candidates shall be prepared by the Selection Authority, equal to the number of vacancies, after taking into consideration the reservation of posts provided by or under any law, rule or order and such final selection list shall be published in the official Gazette.
The select list of candidates so prepared and published shall be sent to the Appointing Authority. The Appointing Authority may appoint the candidates in the vacancies in the particular category of post in the order in which their names are found in the list, after satisfying itself, and after such enquiry as may be considered necessary that such candidates are otherwise suitable in all respects for appointment.
For direct recruitment
I. Age limit:-
Notwithstanding anything contained in Rule 6 of the Karnataka Civil Services (General recruitment) rules, 1977, must have attained the age of 21 years but not attained the age of :-
(i) 28 years in the case of the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, or other Backward Classes.
(ii) 26 years in the case of others:
Provided that in the case of candidates who is an Ex-servicemen discharged from service by reason of demobilization, retrenchment or retirement, age limit shall be relaxed by the number of years of military service rendered by him.
II.Educational Qualification :-
Must be a holder of a degree or possess an equivalent qualification.
III. Physical Standard
A) For men and Ex-service Men.
Height-170 Cms.
Chest -86 Cms (fully expanded with a minimum expansion of 5 cms.)
For Women:
Height-170 Cms.
Weight-45 Kg
B) Vision.
Must have the following standard of distant and near vision with or without glasses.
Distant Vision :
Better Eye Worse Eye.

Each eye must have full field vision. Colour blindness, squint or any morbid condition of the eyes or lids or of either eye shall be deemed to be a disqualification
C) Hearing Tests :
(i) Rinne's, Test
(ii) Webber's Test
(iii) Tests for Vertigo
Any defects observed during the test mentioned above shall be a disqualification.
D) Anyone of the Following shall also be physical disqualification :
(i) Knock Knees
(ii) Bow Legs
(iii) Flat feet
(iv) Varicose veins
(v) Impediment in speech.
IV. Training :
Selected Candidates shall undergo training as may
be specified by the DGP & CG HG from time to time. they are liable to be discharged if they do not pass the specified tests.
V. Probation :
The candidates shall be on probation for two years and six months including the training period from the date of entry into service.
For Promotion :
Must have put in a service of not less than five years in the cadre of Assistant Instructor
